Causes and symptoms

Painful sore throat, difficulty swallowing, headache and fever are all common symptoms of some kind of pharyngitis, commonly known as a sore throat. Frequent in children, sore throats have various causes. Read more about treatment and prevention our special feature.

A symptom of a viral or bacterial infection, sore throats are characterised by acute inflammation of the throat. While generally not serious, they affect over 9 million people in France each year. Accompanying symptoms include a painful throat and difficulty swallowing, fever and headaches. Some sore throats arrive with cold symptoms and even vomiting.

They are very common, particularly in infants under the age of 2, and are often viral infections. In older children, sore throats are due to a bacterial infection in one in five cases.

Treatment

Viral sore throats are transmitted by airborne viruses (coughs, sneezing), by physical contact or by contaminated objects. So they aren’t treated with antibiotics, which are generally ineffective. Instead, the treatment focuses on the symptoms, relieving the fever and pain.  There are natural treatments for sore throats.

In every case, you should seek advice from your pharmacist. If the symptoms persist, see your doctor.
